Brendah Nabatanzi Mpanga
Founder & Managing Partner

Brendah is an advocate of the Courts of Judicature of Uganda, having been admitted to the Bar in 2000. She holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI) Arusha, Tanzania. She is a Graduate Associate with the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, (UK) and a member with (ICSA) Uganda Chapter. She holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Makerere University, and a Diploma in Legal Practice (Dip LP) from the Law Development Centre. She is an alumnus of the prestigious CEO Apprenticeship, associated with Strathmore University, based in Kenya. She is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Corporate Finance with the University of Salford, United Kingdom.

She is the Founder and Managing Partner at BNM Advocates. Her specialty is in Corporate, Commercial Transaction & Corporate Governance advisory. She serves as a Non-Executive Director for Pearl Capital Partners and Vice Chairman of Uganda Biodiversity Fund. She was recently appointed to serve on the Women Lawyers Committee with the East African Law Society. She is also an External Examiner for the Corporate and Commercial Department at the Law Development Centre in Kampala. She is a member of the Uganda Law Society, East Africa Law Society, ICSA(Uganda)

Albert Ovon
Tax Consultant

Albert holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (Finance) from Makerere University, a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University, UK, an Advanced Diploma in Information Systems Management from Aptech Computer, Uganda and a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Forestry from Makerere University.

He is a consultant with more than fifteen years of tax experience in Uganda. He previously worked with Stanbic Bank Uganda Ltd & Ernst & Young, where he also worked with other jurisdictions, namely, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, Congo & DRC. During that time, he amassed deep experience in Taxation & Transaction Advisory across multi-engaged teams within the different jurisdictions.

He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA), a member of the Association of Chartered Public Accountants (ACCA) and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda

Sylla Aissata

Of Counsel

Sylla has been an advocate of the Courts of Judicature of Uganda since 2006. She is a trained Arbitrator and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Sylla holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, both in Kampala, Uganda. She speaks, writes and reads Russian & Luganda as a basic user.

Before joining BNM Advocates, Sylla worked – for over 9 years – with Schlumberger, the leading global oilfield engineering and technology company in the oilfield services industry overseeing diverse geographies. Starting as the Eastern and Southern Africa Legal Counsel, she then worked as the Eastern, Southern & Central Africa Legal Counsel, Sub-Sahara Africa Senior Legal Counsel and Group Compliance Counsel. In this role, amongst others, she negotiated and drafted an oil & gas industry Joint Venture Agreement in Ghana and Equatorial Guinea.

Before Schlumberger, Sylla worked – for over 6 years – with A.F. Mpanga, Advocates, a leading law firm in Uganda, where she started her career and grew to become an Associate Partner. During this time, she advised clients in different industries and on diverse practice areas. Amongst others she: advised on the acquisition of an interest in petroleum exploration licenses over Exploration Areas 1,2 & 3 in Uganda; was one of the contact lawyers for a Ugandan franchise of a global financial institution assessing and managing legal risk, drafting and reviewing contracts, trade documentation and loan securitization documents; she negotiated the resolution of a dispute in an Asian family business which culminated in an amicable resolution.

Her specialty areas are: contract negotiation, drafting and performance management; legal, business ethics and compliance investigations and audits; national content strategy design, implementation and monitoring; joint venture agreements; acquisitions; legal risk mapping, mitigation and monitoring; business ethics and anti-corruption program design, implementation and monitoring.

Her objective as a lawyer is to empower businesses to achieve their business goals using the law as a business enabling tool and minimizing disruptions of a legal nature to guarantee their freedom to operate.

Joel Butakha

Joel holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University, Kampala, and recently completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at the Law Development Centre, Kampala.

He is actively involved in advising clients spanning diverse sectors such as financial services, agribusiness, healthcare, and consumer goods. Joel’s focus includes providing guidance on legal and regulatory compliance, corporate finance, trade finance, employment and labour law, real estate transactions, intellectual property law, and dispute resolution.

Joel also has a strong interest in development finance and is dedicated to promoting the advancement of local communities in Uganda and across Africa. He is dedicated to continuous learning and delivering high-quality assistance to our clients, which underscores our commitment to providing excellent legal services.
